Mayor Reichert Announces 2013 Strategic Plan

Macon Mayor Robert Reichert concluded his four weeks of State of the City updates with a press conference at City Hall on Wednesday, January 30. During that time, he reviewed previous updates provided to the public and discuss the priorities and projects for his office and the City as we move toward a new, consolidated Macon-Bibb County.

“Though we are working through the process of consolidating – and I know this will have a positive and long-term impact on our community – there are still many projects which need to be begun or completed in the next year,” says Mayor Reichert. “We must continue to provide services to the public, complete strategic projects that will improve our community, and provide a seamless transition to the new Macon-Bibb County.”

Mayor Provides SPLOST Update to Advisory Committee, Public

At the January 22 meeting of the Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) Advisory Committee, Mayor Robert Reichert provided an update on projects currently underway. He also talked about the success of projects the past year, next steps for projects underway, exciting improvements for the next year, and an extensive update about the exciting Second Street Downtown Corridor Project.

The Mayor used this public meeting and report as part of his ongoing State of the City to involved and interested stakeholders about progress being made in Macon and what needs to be done in the next year.

Macon-Bibb County Consolidation Update (1.22.13)

Last week, several consolidations meetings were scheduled but were cancelled due to a lack of a quorum. However, there were several updates the Committees wanted to provide the public. Those brief items are included in the file linked in this story.

Bibb County Commissioner Lonzy Edwards and Bibb County Sheriff David Davis have joined the Task Force taking the place of former Commissioner Elmo Richardson and Sheriff Jerry Modena respectively. Commissioner Edwards has been assigned to Finance, Facilities, and Technology Committees, and Sheriff Davis has been assigned to Technology and Human Resources. A new Committee chair for Technology will be named shortly.

Macon Hosts Community Service Fair

The City of Macon, MLK Commission, Volunteer Macon, United Way of Central Georgia, Macon Housing Authority, Unity-N-Community, The Macedonia Church, and Awakening Fires are holding a community service fair for local organizations and the public called Macon A Difference: Celebrating and Connecting those that Care and those that Need Care.

The two-day event will be held February 1 and 2 at the Macon Centreplex, and organizations will be offered workshops, networking opportunities, and a recognition lunch, as well as an opportunity to showcase their work to the general public.

“This is a chance for our community organizations to come together, learn from each other, share knowledge and expertise, find new ways to partners, raise awareness with the public of the importance of volunteering, and increase the number of people volunteering,” says Keith Moffett with the City of Macon.

Mayor Continues State of the City with Economic Development Updates, Public Forums

Throughout January, Mayor Robert Reichert is providing the public with presentations and forums that will serve as a State of the City update. This week, the Mayor will be speaking at several meetings and forums about economic development in Macon, including the Second Street Downtown Corridor, Middle Georgia Regional Airport, Consolidation, and the Sardis Church/Sgoda Road Connector.

There will be three community input sessions this week for the Second Street Downtown Corridor master planning process. The Mayor will take time at the beginning of each meeting to discuss the impact that redeveloping and revitalizing the area from East Macon through Downtown and on to Mercer along 2nd Street will have on the entire city.

The first meeting will be on Monday, January 14 in the 4th floor Conference Room of the Historic Macon Terminal Station from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The public will have a chance to review and comment on the Draft Design Plan that was developed at the multi-day, public Design Charrette last September and then refined by the CHA Team and the City of Macon over the past 3 months. The next two meetings will specifically focus on soliciting neighborhood input regarding the Draft Design plan. The first will be for the Tindall Heights, College Hill, and Bealls Hill neighborhoods on Tuesday, January 15 at the Buck Melton Center, and the final neighborhood meeting will be for the East Macon, Coliseum, and Centreplex neighborhoods on Thursday, January 17 at the Middle Georgia Regional Commission office. Both Neighborhood meetings will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

Macon Earns Clean Audit Opinion

Annual Audit Shows City’s Fiscal Stability
Highlights Continued Improvement & Fewer Findings

“Each year, the City has taken steps to improve its fiscal health and be good stewards of the taxpayers’ money,” says Macon Mayor Robert Reichert. “The most recent audit shows to the public that, despite challenges, we are proactive in our budgeting and accounting.”

Mayor Reichert reviewed the Fiscal Year 2012 audit with City Council at a Work Session on Tuesday, January 8. The team from Mauldin & Jenkins, Certified Public Accountants and Consultants, has reviewed the finances and other systems for Macon and have rendered an Unqualified (Clean) Opinion for Macon. This is the third consecutive year that Macon has received this distinction.

According to the Miller Edwards with Mauldin & Jenkins, there has been great improvement in financial controls and fiscal responsibility during Mayor Reichert’s administration, even with such major challenges such as the recession faced by the entire country which caused serious cash flow issues.
